Portland is in south western Victoria and lies on an east facing shore. This large breakwater is sheltered from the wild south-westerlies that often blow in from the southern ocean. Depth is 12m opposite the tug berth and 14m out at the end.
The big bluestone boulders provide nooks and crannies for nudibranchs, lobsters, seadragons and the occasional cuttle. Big rays, wrasse, old wives and leatherjackets also hang about here.
Parking could not be closer as long as the fishos aren't out in force. The only hassles are scrambling down the rocks to the water and dodging cast fishing lines.
The breakwater is also the tug berth and the best diving is just opposite on the outer or north side. Drive down the lower foreshore road towards the Marine museum and out on to the breakwater.
