Portsea Hole, carved out by the Yarra River, is a 30m deep sandy depression less than 1km NW of Portsea Pier. The northern edge is a sponge covered wall extending for around 75m, which descends from 12m straight down to 26m. The sand then slopes further down to around 30m.

The wall has undercuts and ledges providing shelter to abundant fish life and fantastic fixed growth of sponges, ascidians and zooanthids.

This is a popular slack water boat dive and is sheltered from southerlies. It's often a fall back site if the Nepean and Lonsdale walls are undiveable, but is a great dive in it's own right.
