This is the best place in the world to see Leafy seadragons.
Rapid Bay jetty is a 1.5km long 10m high corroding metal jetty on the south western shore of the Fleureau Peninsula. Divers used to trek out to the end towing dive gear on all manner of carts and trolleys. These days access to the jetty has been stopped due to it's dilapidated state. Now I guess you have to do a boat dive or steel yourself for the marathon swim from shore. Reportedly diving here can be sensational however the two dives I have done have been less than perfect with poor vis and annoying current. We did manage to find a leafy on the second attempt making the hassle worthwhile and I would not hesitate to return. In good vis and calm seas this would be a ripper of a dive with 10m depth and heaps of critters. If you are observant you may find leafy and weedy seadragons, nudibranchs, old wives, moonlighters, octopus and small sharks. Return to Photo albums Return to Andy and Virg UW |
