These brilliant sponge gardens are further inside the bay at a depth of 12m, about midway between Popes Eye and Mud Island on the northern edge of Symonds Channel
Lots of sponge decorator crabs, small fish, nudibranchs and even the occasional octopus live amongst the wildly shaped and coloured sponges. This is a flat sandy area spanning maybe 100m square well in from the swells and strong currents coming through the heads. |
